Grand Rapids (Mich.) photograph album, 1880-1899.

Worn, red leather cover with black and gold geometric pattern,and vine pattern around the edges. The two piece lock and spine cover are missing. 26 gilded pages hold a variety of small photographs, mostly carte-de-visites of men (48), women (29), babies ((1), groups, including a cricket team in Glasgow (5), a man and woman together (1), girls (6), and boys (7). One of the men is identified as the stage comedian John E. Owens. Another man is in the uniform of an European soldier in Calcutta (India). One photograph is of an unidentified bust sculpture. Undated, the album clearly is from the end of the nineteenth century. There is also a photograph identified as Myat Kahn from Burma. The album was a lot purchase. The creator is unknown. Some of the photographs were taken in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo (Mich.), Glasgow, Calcutta, and Burma. Grand Rapids photographers include: Fred G. Heath, John F. Davis, and Wyke's.

John E. Owens was one of the most popular American actors of the nineteenth century. He was born in Liverpool and at the age of five was brought to Philadelphia where he made his stage debut in 1841 under the aegis of William Burton. Although his rise was comparatively slow, he acquired celebrity as a comedian within ten years.
